Built in 1904, the Xujiahui Cathedral, a redbrick building with gray roof, is a well-known church in china. As the main church of the Catholic Shanghai Parish, it was formally called the church of St. Mary Mother of God. on the side of the church is the residence of the bishop and a nunnery. The magnificent structure has 19 altars and can hold Mass of over 3,000 worshippers. The church, which has tens of thousands of worshippers, remains an active religious centre for Catholics in shanghai. Every morning Masses are given. The church is now a major historical and cultural site under city protection.

Xujiahui Cathedral(The St. Ignatius Cathedral) Features

It was destroyed in the Cultural Revolution and it have been gloriously restored recent year. As a missionary center, the cathedral grounds once included a library, an orphanage, a college, a publishing house, and its own weather station. Today only the church, part of the school, and the recently reopened library remain. Its vast interior of altars, stone columns, Gothic ceilings, stained glass windows, and paintings of the Last Supper and Stations of the Cross, is yet another chapter in Shanghai's living history of European architecture. Services are available every Sunday morning.
